SLOPPY JOE ON WHEAT!

By Chef Gustavo Gonzalez

Looking for something to do with ground beef?

I have your answer:

Homemade Sloppy Joe — Yes, the beloved sandwich by the chef named Joe from the cafe in Sioux City, Iowa.

This is not the lunch lady’s special or something that comes in a can you might be familiar with.

One half pound of ground beef will yield you 2 overstuffed sandwiches or 3 to 4 not so stuffed sandwiches. If you need a larger batch just double or triple the recipe.

The ingredients –
1/2 pound ground chuck
1 small tomato chopped
1 small onion chopped
1 small green bell pepper chopped

(regular sized veggies would be perfect for doubling this recipe)

3 cloves garlic minced
1/4 cup ketchup
1/8 cup barbecue sauce
2 teaspoons Gustavo’s Cajun Seasoning
1/8 cup yellow mustard
1 heaping tablespoon light brown sugar
1/2 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 teaspoon worchester sauce

Add oil to large skillet preheated to medium heat, next add in chopped onion, bell pepper, tomato, garlic and 1 teaspoon of Gustavo’s Cajun Seasoning, in that order. Mix well and sauté for approximately 10 minutes.

Meanwhile preheat another skillet to medium high and brown beef while mixing in mustard, worchester sauce and the remaining Gustavo’s Cajun Seasoning. Once beef is browned, drain away all the unwanted grease and combine with vegetable mixture. Add in remainder of ingredients and simmer for ten more minutes.

Now either serve on your favorite toasted bun or loaf bread. I used my new favorite multi grain wheat bread from HEB grocery in Houston. It is very comparable to Orowheat Oatnut Bread, but half the price. I toasted it up to perfection in my cuisinart toaster and enjoyed my creation,  my gourmet sloppy joe sandwich.
